Telstra Wholesale is shutting down its 3G network on the 31st of August, 2024. Telstra will be applying an RVA message to impacted mobiles
Recorded Voice Announcement (RVA)
Impacted devices will soon play a non-optional reminder message on every outgoing call, urging users to upgrade.
Why the RVA?
This is to ensure user safety. After the 3G closure, affected phones won’t be able to make ANY calls, including emergency calls to 000
How to fix?
Users must either upgrade their device to a 4G/5G compatible phone or update their device software (if the update enables 4G emergency calling)
Sample RVA
“When Telstra’s 3G network closes on 31 August 2024, it’s likely this phone won’t be able to make calls, including emergency calls. Contact your service provider for details.”
What customers can do?
Check device compatibility
Customers can use the free SMS Device Checker by texting “3G” to 3498
Upgrade or update
Impacted customers will need to either upgrade their device to a new 4G/5G compatible phone, or update their software and settings (if applicable) to enable 4G emergency calling.
Don’t test by calling 000
Emphasize that calling 000 to test us unnecessary and disrupts emergency services.
Emergency calling after 3G network closure
Due to 3G Networks, on August 31st, 2024, certain older devices, even if 4G-capable, might be unable to make emergency calls (000/112/911) after this date. You must inform your customers of this risk and advice them to upgrade if necessary.
Why this matters?
Impacted services
We will provide you with a list of services in your network that are likely affected. This will be sent via our account managers. There will be two categories:
- Known Affected Devices: Customers must replace these.
- Unknown Devices: Customers should check with their manufacturer and replace their device if in doubt.
